The grounds

I

Gardens, olives and a vineyard of its own

The pool sits away from the house rather than at the door — which reads as an inconvenience on a plan and as peace of mind with four children in the party. It has a fountain at one end and a diving board at the other, and steps into the water instead of a ladder, so everyone can use it whatever their age.

Around it: Italian gardens, two olive groves, and a vineyard that belongs to the villa and runs down the slope towards the hills. The whole property is fenced and shut.

The terrace above the balustrade takes a table for fourteen and a set of sofas, and it is where the evening happens — the hills go gold at about eight.
