The iron gate opens on a double row of cypresses, and the drive runs between them to the house. Behind it: Italian gardens, two olive groves, a vineyard that belongs to the villa, and a pool with a fountain at one end and a diving board at the other.

Eight bedrooms over four levels, the last of them in the old tower — reached by a glass staircase, with a gym at the top and a terrace to do yoga on. The whole property is fenced and shut, and the pool has steps rather than a ladder, so nobody is left at the edge of it.

The iron gate opens and the drive runs between two lines of cypresses to the door. It is the entrance every guest photographs, and the reason the villa has been married in more than once.

Behind the house the land belongs to it: Italian gardens, two olive groves, and a vineyard that runs down the slope. All of it inside the fence.

The old tower was reconnected to the house with a panoramic staircase in glass. What it opens onto is a gym — Technogym, properly equipped — with a bedroom beside it and a terrace to do the rest outside.

It is the one part of the building that admits to being of this century, and the part guests who run tend to mention first.

Getting here

Forty-five minutes from Pisa airport, five from Terricciola, forty from Volterra.

Terricciola is wine country, half an hour inland from the coast. Pisa airport is forty-five minutes, Florence an hour and ten, Volterra forty.

Come by car. There is fenced parking for seven behind the house.

Can we rent part of the house?

No. Villa Donna Camilla is let whole, to one party, with the gardens, the vineyard and the pool to yourselves.

How many does it sleep?

Sixteen across eight bedrooms, including three suites on the first floor and one in the tower.

Is the pool safe for children?

The whole property is fenced and gated, and the pool sits away from the house rather than at the door. It has steps into the water rather than a ladder.

Is there really a gym?

Yes — Technogym equipment in the top of the old tower, with a terrace off it.

Is it air conditioned?

Every bedroom, included in the stay.
